Funnies 2 Laugh At

A new, young MD doing his residency in OB was quite embarrassed performing female pelvic exams. To cover his embarrassment he had unconsciously formed a habit of whistling softly. The middle aged lady upon whom he was performing this exam suddenly burst out laughing and further embarrassed him. He looked up from his work and sheepishly said, "I'm sorry. Was I tickling you?" She replied, "No doctor, but the song you were whistling was "I wish I was an Oscar Meyer Wiener."

Back that thing up

Just the video i was looking for. A parody reminder to tell everyone to back up your work, cuz I've been there... and when you have to redo medical school work. It's no joke.

The Bare Necessities of Life

I can not wait to go home. Recently, while conversing with non-medical people, I became instilled with a feeling of life in me. I guess when you get far along enough in this road to doctordom, you start to create a doctor-like identity, a divide between healthcare individuals and not. People expect you to be knowledgeable about medicine and health. And it feels nice, to represent such an identity, but right now, I've had enough. I just want to finish up this semester and dive into society like a normal guy. I'll probably relax a couple days in Grenada before I do though. :) enjoy a paw-paw or two. Just like baloo.

(if you travel up the island, Grenada actually starts looking like this, and yes... we have paw paws), I never knew they were a real thing until I came here. And now... Jungle book.

Ribs, the remedy to your sleeping problems

We all have trouble sleeping here I assume. Some days I just lay in bed, wide awake for hours. Then I feel guilty for having wasted hours of study time laying around. Having insomnia in medical school is as sure as the sun will rise, which I'm sometimes awake to see. Oh well.

However, the thing that matters most is getting a full nights sleep the night before a test, and my personal breakfast reccomendation: A banana. ( your brain needs the potassium ). If you have problems falling asleep, you can always medicate yourself. No, not with sleeping pills. I would suggest chamomile tea, that... or RIBS.

Term 4 Midterm 2 - We are the tink tinks in this race

So, the pathology department decides to "break our legs" 1 month before the end of the term, just before the last stretch. We trained so hard, and now some of us, we just can't finish the race. The reported average of our 2nd midterm was said to be 61% (by the way 70% is passing). Yes, we do get extra credit points for attendence and professionalism, but it's hard to act professional when the thing you worked so hard for seemed to be so un-achievable.

I think of the story of little Tink-Tink, who gets his legs replaced, and not only does he get back in to the race, but he wins it... theres a little twist at the end which goes to show the system doesn't allow for change, kind of like this unforgiving department. But we must persevere. I think we should, one way or another, just get back in this race, win this Final Exam, and pass swiftly through this finish line, straight into 5th term. Because, dang it, we are almost there! They've tried to knock us down, but all we can do is get back up and keep trying.  (Again, sorry for the vulgar language, but this is so funny and inspirational I had to put it up).

Medical School Life Vs Normal Life

I always wonder what life would be like outside of this world. This comparison is hilariously accurate, especially during finals week. But to be honest, its not so bad, the fast paced lifestyle comes with a lot of work, yes, but we also have quite a lot of fun as well.

Soon to come... Term 4 Feedback

The second pathology midterm was bad. real bad. I am pretty positive I heard two people vomiting in the bathroom during the exam from anxiety, and there were some that left right in the middle. For those with enough balls to finish the exam, although it was certainly a time crunch, there there.... there, there. I just hope we pass.
Now I have to study for micro... and cpd, and then watch everyone leave the island as we slave away for another month learning about skin diseases, genitalia, and renal systems, etc. help us.

Lets just hope Angel doesn't go down. I didn't make this, but being at this school can be quite frustrating. If it weren't for the freedom, the giant sea turtles that come once a year to lay their eggs, the carnival celebrations in August... the beach, the pina coladas, okay its really not bad. Back to work! (sorry if this video is too explicit, but sometimes you just feel like life is crushing you and SGU is to blame. I guess that's why we learn to be resourceful and indifferent to change). I guess when you don't get the things you want, experience is what you get instead. And now... Hitler's response to Angel Being Down.

Medical School is like Eating Pancakes

I barely have time to think about how and what to post on here, or actually, time to think at all for that matter.
I don't get requests, but I realize some of you are getting here from the SGU website. That's great! fine.

So, what I want to say is that if you're thinking about medical school, remember this:

It doesn't matter how smart you are. What really matters is if you have self control, and a strong work ethic.  ADD definitely does not help. For me, and many others, someone walks in the room, you can't help but pause your studying to look up and see who it is. Imagine how much time is wasted when you're doing that every 5 minutes. And let's not forget facebook! Okay, but I digress...

Medical school is like being fed Pancakes. Each day, without fail, and you must.. repeat, MUST eat them all. In a way, you are being fed the thing you're good at (learning). What I mean is, all of us here are smart. It may not seem like it at times, but we are all intelligent people. That's why we are here. It is a volume game, that material isn't necessarily difficult. Some of us like to procrastinate though. So, maybe you aren't hungry at times, and that's when you start feeling the pressure when you've got to squeeze 1000 pancakes into your brain. Or maybe, you just want to eat something else, you get tired of pancakes. Understandable... but can you really risk your future career just because you are uncomfortable?

Anyway, I won't take credit for the metaphor, these guys have put together a decently entertaining video about what it is like to be in medical school.

So, if you're on the phone with the admissions office, or you reply to that acceptance letter, know what you're getting in to. You're saying yes to eating pancakes for the rest of your life, or... at least until you retire.

Eminem Physiology/Neuroscience Study Aide

Eminem inspires me to be well versed in the ways of medical terminology, and rhyming.

"D.M.C we have a mid 30s male
found down unresponsive
possible over dose
substance unknown
pulse is 60 and thready
respirations 8 hes intubated
and we're bagging him now
uuh B.P 90 over palp
patient cool pale and diaphoretic

uuh G.S.C is 3

E.T.A 10 minutes"

It's always good to know your favorite rappers keep up with appropriate use of the Glasgow Coma Scale and vital signs.

Thanks

So, just wanted to give a quick shout-out to God, or Evolution, or a combination of the two forces that have created what is known as the current version of the human body.

1) Thank you for not creating More neural pathways and Cranial Nerves.
2) Thank you for not creating more Autonomic Receptors.
3) Especially thank you for not creating more DNA replication/transcription/translational machinery. You have done quite enough there sir.
4) Thank you for keeping the number of muscles to a number I can count to. (less than 500)
5) Thank you for keeping the bones to a relative Minimum.
6) Thank you for not creating more Ion's. Holy hell. Enough with the ions.
7) For the most part, thank you for developmental anomalies. No serious. Thanks dude. (not)
8) Nice try with the kidneys, adrenal glands, ovaries, and testes. We figured that one out.
9) Oh, and twisting the gut? Yea, we figured that out too smart guy.
10) Seriously, THANK YOU for not making the body any more hopelessly and unfathomably complex. If you had, I would have failed out of Medical School months ago.

Oh yea, also a Huge Shoutout to CITIBANK, my own personal financer/God.

How to make Study Breaks Educational

Quite a good skill to have when you spend so much time studying...make your study breaks educationally relavent.

Two of my favorite examples:

1) Grave's Disease. Characteristic of Hyperthyroidism and Exopthalmos (protruding eyeballs).
Of course I would recognize that one of my fav comedians has Grave's disease, Rodney Dangerfield! R.I.P.

RODNEY DANGERFEILD - STAND UP COMEDY- (CLICK THIS)

2) The Cochlea. The hearing apparatus of the ear. Why not spend my break using this this magical device in my head to procrastinate? This is too cool though, Get some headphones. Trust me.

... see medical stuff CAN be fun!
